somewhere in Alabama
I have often gathered materials from an industrial dumping site near Tuscaloosa. As I was getting ready to leave town and needed to get rid of some materials, I decided to make an installation in this site using the aluminum poured in "world traveler." During the summer, this field is covered in a dense layer of kudzu, which then dyes off in the fall to reveal a mix of soils dumped from different parts of the city. I planted the frozen flows of aluminum on this hillside. I see this piece as a ritual of place-making in which materials and plants from different geographical origins work together to produce a dense material knot that is part of the history and identity of Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
